Born: Cape Girardeau, Missouri
James R. Tweedy was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri in 1965 and graduated from Puxico High School in 1983. He attended the University of Missouri for his undergraduate and graduate degrees, earning a B.S. in Agricultural Economics in 1987 and a J.D. in 1989. Upon graduation, Mr. Tweedy returned to southeast Missouri and began his legal career at Oliver, Oliver, Waltz & Cook, P.C., a firm that handled primarily insurance defense matters. He passed the Missouri and Illinois bar examinations in 1990 and was licensed to practice in each state that year. After approximately four years with The Oliver Firm, Mr. Tweedy left the firm and opened Tweedy Law Office in his native Stoddard County, Missouri.
Mr. Tweedy maintains a general civil practice, that includes juvenile, probate, estate planning, collection, business and domestic matters and a general criminal defense, which includes traffic matters in addition to serious felony charges. On May 2, 2008, Governor Matt Blunt selected Mr. Tweedy to serve as one of six commissioners for the Missouri Ethics Commission. Mr. Tweedy's appointment was confirmed by the Missouri Senate and his term will expire on March 15, 2012. Mr. Tweedy is currently serving as Vice Chairman of the Commission. Mr. Tweedy is a member of The Missouri Bar, and has previously served as the district representative to the Young Lawyers Section Council of The Missouri Bar. He has previously served as President of the Stoddard County Bar Association, President of the Mizzou Ag Alumni Association, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Southeast Missouri Legal Services, Inc., and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Center for Family Resources, Inc. Mr. Tweedy has been serving as treasurer of the Stoddard County Children's Home, Inc., since 2003.
